Our Programmes
Our programmes are designed to bridge the theoretical and practical gaps in Animal Rights Law. We empower individuals and organisations with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to effect systemic change.
Our approach emphasises the importance of building bridges between academia and industry, fostering collaboration among those working towards common goals, and nurturing a supportive community dedicated to advancing animal rights.

Education
Our Education Programme is dedicated to advancing the understanding, development, application, and enforcement of animal rights. We offer a range of specialised online courses, dynamic seminars, intensive workshops, and in-person trainings designed to provide comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in Animal Rights Law and Ethics. Starting online in January 2025, our courses and the Seminar Series on Litigating and Legislating for Animal Rights will equip an international audience—including students, legal professionals, policymakers, academics, NGO professionals, animal advocates, veterinarians, individuals involved in other social justice causes or willing to transition careers, and the general public—with the necessary tools to advocate effectively for animal rights.
By equipping participants with advanced analytical skills, legal reasoning, advocacy competencies, and essential theoretical knowledge, we empower a diverse group to initiate impactful legal and societal changes. Focusing on strategic areas such as legislation and policy drafting, litigation, research and advocacy, our courses aim to catalyse systemic change in how society views and treats animals.
In tandem with our educational offerings, we are launching a monthly Seminar Series on Litigating and Legislating for Animal Rights beginning in January 2025. This series will provide a platform for in-depth discussion and knowledge sharing on the intersection of animal rights advocacy, strategic litigation, and legislative reform. By bringing together legal experts, practitioners, and academics, we facilitate lively and insightful sessions where participants can engage with leaders in the field and explore strategies for advancing animal rights. -
Research
We conduct innovative legal and interdisciplinary research in Animal Rights Law and policy. Focusing on critical areas such as animal labour, animals in wars and disasters, political representation of animals, and wildlife trafficking and wildlife crime, we aim to lay a solid foundation for the development of legislation, public policies, advocacy campaigns, and case law that better protect the fundamental interests of animals.
Our Research Programme is organised into specialised working groups composed of academics, industry experts, and practitioners. These working groups foster collaborative exploration and actionable insights, advancing our mission to end animal exploitation and suffering. Alums of our courses are encouraged to join these groups, contributing their expertise and passion to drive meaningful change.
In addition, we are proud to support and finance the publication of the Journal of Animal Rights Law (JARL), a peer-reviewed, open-access legal journal dedicated to advancing Animal Rights Law as an autonomous academic discipline. JARL publishes cutting-edge research that contributes to the development and dissemination of Animal Rights Law globally. Serving as a platform for scholars, practitioners, and advocates, the journal fosters interdisciplinary dialogue and innovative scholarship. JARL also hosts academic seminars with published authors, promoting dynamic exchanges of ideas within the field. Committed to principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), JARL ensures that a wide range of voices and perspectives are represented, enriching the discourse on Animal Rights Law and Ethics. -
Collaboration & Strategic Counsel
We offer specialised strategic counsel designed to advance Animal Rights Law and policy initiatives. Our consulting service provides expert advice and tailored solutions to non-governmental organisations, animal advocates, and policymakers committed to ending animal exploitation and suffering.
On the other hand, upon completing their certification, our alums are welcomed into ICARE's Animal Rights and Vegan Advocacy Network (ARVAN), a collaborative community hosted on ICARE's Slack platform. ARVAN fosters professional support, collaboration, and impactful advocacy among individuals dedicated to advancing animal rights and food systems transition.
By joining ARVAN, alums become part of a dynamic network that encourages mutual support and empowers members to initiate meaningful legal and societal changes. This network embodies ICARE's commitment to fostering a community where impactful animal advocacy is achieved through collaboration and shared expertise. Together, we strive to advance our mission of ending animal exploitation and suffering worldwide. -
Advocacy
Our Advocacy Programme promotes the recognition and enforcement of animals' legal rights within national, regional, and international legal frameworks. Focusing on strategic, evidence-based initiatives that maximise impact, we advocate for the adoption of international instruments and national legislation that protect animal rights and welfare, drawing upon reliable data and interdisciplinary research.
We collaborate closely with partner organisations to leverage collective expertise and resources, striving to effect meaningful change. By actively participating in international debates and forums and contributing to the development of case law that respects fundamental animal rights, we influence policy and legal advancements.
In addition to our long-term initiatives, ICARE is committed to taking prompt action on pressing animal rights issues. We engage in targeted, short-term efforts based on reliable data to address immediate challenges, ensuring that animals' fundamental interests are protected. Through this strategic and evidence-based approach, we effectively and responsibly advance our mission to end animal exploitation and suffering.
